AFITI is accredited to conduct fire tests under UL 263 and ASTM E119 standards

The Association for the Promotion of Research and Technology in Fire Safety (AFITI) has recently obtained accreditation to conduct fire tests in accordance with UL 263 and ASTM E119 standards. This new accreditation expands AFITI's capability to assess the fire resistance of materials and construction systems according to internationally recognized standards.

20 Years after the Windsor Building Fire: Lessons in Fire Protection

The flames started on the 21st floor and, due to the structure of the building and the lack of adequate protection systems, they spread out of control. The Windsor lacked automatic sprinklers and an efficient containment system, which allowed the fire to spread rapidly. In addition, the flammable material used in its construction aggravated the situation.

The California Fire and the Importance of Fire Testing of Building Materials

The recent fire in California is a reminder of the challenges we face in a world increasingly affected by climate change. Implementing passive fire safety measures, such as the use of fire tested materials, is essential to protect lives, property and the environment.

Technical Conference on Fire Safety Certification at the Instituto Claudio Galeno

On 25 November, we had the honour of visiting the Claudio Galeno Institute of Professional Training in Health Emergencies and Civil Protection to present an enriching technical seminar entitled ‘Certification of the conformity of fire safety materials, elements, products and systems’, given by our colleague, engineer Krissel Pérez.

Innovation in Fire Prevention: Building on Modern Construction

Fire-resistant materials have become an essential component of modern construction. Fire-resistant panels, intumescent coatings, and glass with high thermal resistance offer effective solutions to mitigate the spread of flames.

Update of the Ordinance Regulating Fire Resistance Testing

As we well know, the regulation of fire resistance in construction products is crucial to ensuring safety in buildings. Over the years, European regulations have evolved to reflect technological advancements and new demands for safety and sustainability. In this context, the transition from Regulation 2000/367/EC to Regulation 2024/1681 is noteworthy.

AFITI attends the Security Forum 2024, discussing building materials and elements and their relationship with the building envelope from the perspective of a fire testing laboratory.

The Security Forum 2024, held in the vibrant city of Barcelona, Spain, brought together prominent professionals and experts from the security sector to share knowledge, innovations, and cutting-edge practices. The Association for the Promotion of Research and Technology in Fire Safety (AFITI) presented a lecture titled "Fire Behavior of Materials and Construction Elements and their Relationship with the Building Envelope from the Perspective of a Fire Testing Laboratory."

Reflections on Fire Safety: Lessons from the Grenfell Tower

In the past decade, Europe has witnessed multiple fires that have triggered profound reflection on residential construction safety, most notably the tragedy at Grenfell Tower in London. This event underscored the importance of fire protection in buildings and prompted a thorough review of safety practices in the sector.

AFITI hosts Market Surveillance authorities for the Marine Equipment Directive from the ADCO Group.

At AFITI's facilities in Toledo, a meeting was held with Market Surveillance authorities for the Marine Equipment Directive from the ADCO Group. This meeting, which took place on Wednesday, April 24, is part of the ADCO Group's initiative to facilitate cooperation, exchange of information, and experiences in market surveillance, in accordance with Article 30 of Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 on market surveillance and compliance of products, as well as the MED 2014/90/EU Directive itself in its Article 33.
